From Concept to Creation: The Logo Design Process

By: Brooke Whitehead

As a student at Utah Valley University (UVU) one of my very first classes in the Web Design major had me pick a local Utah company and redesign their logo. I decided to design a logo for my friend's photography business she had just started titled Rowley Production. Rowley Productions primarily focuses on wedding photography and specializes in engagement and wedding photos.

Goals:

  • Design a logo that is unique and fits the business well.

  • Better understand what makes a logo and basic design principles.

Audience:

  • Recently engaged couples looking for a wedding photographer or videographer.

What's in a Logo?

To start this project, I began to research photography businesses to compare logos. In class and looking at businesses I learned that the best logos are simple and represent the company. From this knowledge, I was able to get some really good ideas. This helped me put together a bunch of sketches. From those sketches I was able to choose three that I thought were the best and make digital versions of them to show my class.

Peer Review

My favorite part of the process is when I got to share my designs with my peers and professors. This is where I feel I learn the most. For me, I can sit around all day studying principles, but getting to fix my work with guidance from others is where I really learn the best. After talking to my professors, I found that two of my designs were good, but they didn’t feel completely right. The first was the lens of a camera in the shape of a heart and the other was a camera with a heart where the lens would be. As I pondered what I could do to better the design, I realized I had a design for a camera and a lens, so the easy answer would be to just combine them. So that is what I did! It was great when I went back to my class with the combined design and my professors loved it! It felt really good to know that I was able to take others' feedback and apply it in a way that made both my designs much better than they would have been without that.

Finishing it Up

In the end I was able to design a logo and was happy to hear great things from my professors and peers. I shared my designs with my friend who owns the company and I am very proud of the work that I did and the things I learned from my professors and classmates. Looking back at the experience, I am very glad that I was able to learn from my classmates. It would not be possible to have made this design without them. This project taught me that it is important to get feedback on designs. Even when I find something that I like there can always be ways to improve.
